HEVEA Hevea whale and turtle natural rubber bath toys, grey whale and green turtleHevea natural rubber bath duck, Kawan, yellow with orange bill

Hevea was founded in Denmark in 2009 by Terese Hoffeldt who at the time was a new mother and just like all of us she was concerned about the products she was surrounding her daughter with. While looking for alternatives to plastic she became increasingly  frustrated by the lack of products available, but instead of giving up she researched alternatives herself, once she became aware of natural rubber she started to see the endless possibilities natural rubber offered. Back in 2009 the potential for natural rubber, or Hevea Brasiliensis products was not very well known. As Terese learned about the material and what was possible she realized it was a material that was very unique; not only long lasting and sustainable but also safe for babies and biodegradable.

Geographically, the Hevea company is unique. Since headquartered in Denmark their design philosophy is inherently Danish but the Hevea tree grows mainly in Southeast Asia making it essential that their production is located close to the plantations where the skills and facilities are available. Unifying the beautiful design with clear functionality is the core of the renowned Danish design tradition.

Why do we love Hevea? Because they go the extra mile to use the natural and safe ingredient, not the synthetic alternative. The company’s name tells the story, Hevea is the Latin name for the rubber tree Hevea Brasiliensis. The natural rubber it produces is the foundation for their product line. Using natural rubber, rather than synthetic rubber made from oil, acts against climate change by increasing the number of trees and cutting back on the use of fossil fuels.

We also love that all of Hevea’s package is FSC certified. The FSC trademark on paper is a guarantee that the paper or timber comes from a responsibly managed forest which helps prevent deforestation and degradation. This is important for millions of people who depend on the forest for their livelihood and of course, for the overall environment.

Lastly we love Hevea because their products are darling, practical and well made. They make great gifts that you can feel good about giving and the recipient will actually love and use!

Meliora was founded in2013 by Kate Jakubas who holds a masters degree in environmental engineering. Inspired by a successful campaign spear-headed by the non profit organization, Women’s Voices For The Earth that aimed to reduce the amount of 1,4 dioxane in Tide detergent; the passion and commitment shown by the volunteers in this campaign proved to Kate that there was a demand for safer cleaner products. She was also very aware of the fact that the best way to effect change in the marketplace was to build a brand that is simultaneously financially successful, selective about ingredients and transparent about safety standards. Happily, Meliora continues to fulfill this tall order to this day. From their first day in business, they have disclosed every ingredient in every product right on the label.

Their name says it all. Meliora in Latin means better, and that’s what they continually strive to do as a company which is why we love them.

Badger Healthy Body Care

This amazing company was started by Bill Whyte in 1995 in New Hampshire. Like so many other innovative small businesses, the necessity for a product was the mother of the invention. Bill was working as a carpenter and needed something to sooth his cracked hands and protect them during the cold NH winters, so he created a balm that worked and he wanted to share it with others. With the help of his wife and eventually his two daughters Badger has grown to making over a hundred products and employing over 80 people.

We love Badger because, like CastleWare, it is a family run small business that makes its products in the USA. They only use ingredients that fit their rigorous natural standards for healthy agriculture, minimal processing, sustainable supply chain, and health giving properties. They combine traditional herbal knowledge with years of research and lots of love to create products naturally rich in powerful antioxidants and vitamins for healthier people and a healthier planet.

Badger also gives back to their community and their family of employees.

Badger donates 10% of before-tax profits to charity, with a focus on children and the environment.

Moso Natural

Julie Bosak introduced the Moso Natural air purifying bags to the US market in 2010 after many years of working to develop a simple and effective air purifier that did not rely on a cocktail of toxic chemicals to work.

The hunt for finding just the right material that was both effective enough to neutralize bad smells and completely safe for people and the environment led her to the Fujian Provence of China where she learned about the amazing qualities of Moso Bamboo.

Moso bamboo is a species of giant timber bamboo native to China that grows to 55 feet and up. Like most bamboo, Moso quickly grows into full maturity in just 5 years. The process of converting the bamboo into bamboo charcoal begins with cutting down the bamboo (it then grows back). The cut bamboo is dried for a few weeks, and then treated in a kiln at 750°C for two weeks to create the charcoal. Moso bamboo charcoal has millions of tiny little pores and cavities that work together to act like a big sponge. As air passes by the Moso Bag, the bamboo charcoal has a slight ionic charge that attracts particles. This charge traps odors, harmful pollutants and moisture particles inside of the pores of the bamboo charcoal. Once the pores have filled up, which takes about a month, it is time to rejuvenate the charcoal in the sun so that the Moso Bag has more space in its pores to absorb pollutants.

Julie searched the U.S. and abroad, looking for healthy options. She found Moso bamboo charcoal in China, where they call it “black diamond.” This product seemed perfect: eco-friendly, sustainable, affordable, and so safe that in parts of Asia people use it not only to purify their air and water; they also ingest it to help detoxify the body.

She conducted research and testing and found that bamboo charcoal works incredibly well to remove odors, remove bacteria, absorb harmful chemicals and dehumidify.

What Makes Moso Bamboo different from other species?

  • CO2 Neutral: Moso outperforms all other bamboos, as well as hardwood varieties, in carbon dioxide absorption and oxygen production.
  • Endless Resource: Annual harvest of mature stems does not harm the mother plant.
  • Rapid Regeneration: Moso is the most rapidly growing plant on the planet. It grows at the amazing speed of about 1 meter daily.
