What is Organic Cotton?
Organic cotton is cotton grown organically from non-genetically modified plants and without toxic pesticides, fungicides, and synthetic fertilizers. Organic cotton reigns supreme over conventional cotton because it doesn’t require industrial processing to convert it to the fabric.
Conventional cotton is one of the most chemical-intensive crops in the world today and these chemicals are not only bad for your health, but they have an awful impact on the environment. In fact, growing cotton uses 10-16% of the world’s pesticides although cotton only covers 2.5% of the world’s cultivated land. This is more pesticide usage than any other single major crop. With organically grown cotton, there is zero need for chemicals, which is better for earth’s air, water and soil.
In addition to being better for the environment, organic cotton is of better quality. The reason is because of how organic cotton is produced. Since organic cotton growers remove cotton by hand, it is much cleaner. With conventionally grown cotton, harvesting machines are used and during this process, seeds and oil are mixed with cotton. Cleansers with harsh chemicals are then used to remove the oil and seeds in order to clean the cotton. Considering organic cotton is picked by hand, there are no seeds or oils mixed in so a natural cleanser can be used to wash it. In addition to organic cotton being cleaner, it’s also much stronger considering the fibers haven’t been weakened by chemical cleansers and dyes.
Dyes are another element that should be given attention. Often with convention cotton, dyes with heavy metals are used. However, with organic cotton, only low-impact environmental dyes are used. At Castleware Baby, we only use low-impact, fiber-reactive dyes. To learn more about these dyes, please visit our FAQ page.
Why You Should Buy Organic Cotton Pajamas for Your Child
The most important reason to purchase organic cotton clothing like pajamas for your child is that it is healthier for them. Babies sleep for up to 16 hours a day so do you want your child sleeping in an environment where harsh chemicals can come in contact with their sensitive skin and respiratory systems? We think not! Babies have sensitive skin and as a result, are more sensitive to chemicals such as flame-retardants, wrinkle resisters and dyes so do them the favor of providing a sleeping environment that is free of these irritants.
In addition to being a safer choice, organic cotton pajamas are of superior quality because the fibers haven’t been weakened during processing. As a result, organic cotton is also softer so it is more comfortable for your little one. It also holds up to the test of time and will last longer than pajamas made with conventional cotton so that is another added benefit.
Organic cotton is better for you, your child and the environment so if ever debating between purchasing conventional cotton vs organic cotton pajamas, you should always make the choice to purchase organic!
