Has your infant or child been diagnosed with eczema? If so, you aren’t alone! Eczema is quite common. In fact, 10-20% of American children deal with this medical condition. Those with eczema deal with dry and extremely itchy skin that often becomes inflamed and discolored. Unfortunately, doctors aren’t able to pinpoint the exact cause of this medical condition. It is believed that eczema is caused by a combination of elements including genetics, immunity, activity, skin defects and environmental triggers. People with eczema also have an increased risk of skin and other infections so it is important to try and maintain control over this condition. To do that, it is important to avoid triggers, which can include food allergies and environmental triggers such as soaps, perfume, makeup, smoke, dust, sand, chemicals and solvents.
Clothing Can Trigger Eczema
Clothing can be a trigger for eczema due to the fit, fabric and dyes. Clothing that is too snug or that has scratchy seams can irritate skin while fabric that contains allergens or chemicals can both trigger and further irritate eczema. You may be wondering how everyday clothing can cause such a reaction but many fibers in clothing such as rayon and polyester contain harsh chemicals.
Many people believe that natural fibers are the better choice but that isn’t necessarily true because unless natural fibers are labeled as organic, they can still be full of nasty chemicals. If asking why or how our clothes have chemicals in them, it is likely due to the processing agents used to create the finished fabric. This is why it is extremely important to select the proper clothing for infants, children and adults with eczema. The right clothing can play a significant role in helping to avoid eczema flare-ups.
Best Clothing for Infants & Children with Eczema
If your child deals with eczema, the best thing you can do is a switch from synthetic to natural fabrics. In addition to selecting natural products, make sure the clothing is organic so that it is guaranteed to be free from chemicals. Organic cotton clothing is the best choice for infants and children with eczema because it is free from toxic washes, bleach, dyes, and scents, which can all irritate your child’s skin.
If wondering where you can find 100% organic cotton clothing, there are numerous manufacturers most of which you can find online. We at CastleWare Baby are proud to be one of these producers. Our organic cotton products are made of only the purest knitted fabrics, which is chemical-free, preshrunk with hot water, extremely breathable and not itchy, which makes it perfect for anyone suffering from or trying to avoid triggering an eczema flare-up. Our fabrics are made in the USA of organic cotton yarn that is certified as 100% organic cotton by the Texas Dept. of Agriculture, Control Union, or other qualified accredited certifying bodies. Our yarn vendor can produce traceability of their yarn from the organic cotton fiber bale number to the finished yarn size and lot number that we purchase. Furthermore, our yarn spinner is certified to the Global Organic Textile Standards (GOTS).
All equipment used in the knitting process as the fabric passed through each stage of knitting was physically and manually cleaned to remove lint and other contamination from non-organic based yarns and fibers.
No synthetic textile oils, synthetic waxes, and silicone-based surfactants, silicone resins, or other synthetic based resins and synthetic gums were used in the knitting process of our fabrics.
A natural based mineral oil was used in the knitting of our fabrics.
In finishing the fabric we do not use formaldehyde and formaldehyde-urea resins, silicone or silicone-based finishes, synthetic resins or resin-based finishes, synthetic gums or gum-based finishes, synthetic oils or synthetic waxes.
The only dyes we use are low-energy, non-metal, reactive and low impact dyes.
